Government Communications and Public Engagement (GCPE) is a dynamic, progressive organization that supports the government in its ongoing dialogue with British Columbians. GCPE leads and co-ordinates government communications and public engagement through its three divisions: Corporate Priorities and Communications Operations, Strategic Communications Services, and the Government Digital Experience Division.



Under the supervision of the Director, Writing and Editorial Services, the Senior Editor, works with a creative team to edit and proofread communication materials produced for the Premier’s Office, Government Communications and Public Engagement and for government ministries. This position ensures the consistent application of standards for the written material produced for the Office of the Premier and ministries government-wide.



This position provides strategic and technical advice to other GCPE staff on writing requirements.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Liaise with Premier’s and Ministers’ Offices and senior Ministry staff to identify strategic messaging and content requirements for written materials
  • Liaise with senior GCPE staff and government Communication Directors and non-government professionals to develop key written materials including speeches, letters, ministerial statements, presentations, news releases, updates, media advisories, backgrounders, fact sheets, information bulletins, opinion editorials, letters to the editor, feature articles and other editorial materials as directed
  • Strategize and write compelling, informative and intelligent materials for internal and external government communications
  • Develop messaging and incorporate ministerial direction to all government written materials and sensitive documents, customizing each piece to the target audience
  • Understand client ministry’s communication needs and propose and carry out solutions using appropriate communications tool (print, web, social media or other electronic means)
  • Adhere to the organization’s writing and editing policies, standards and practices
  • Evaluate quality of written materials to ensure consistent application of corporate standards, policies and protocols
  • Provide editorial advice and direction to ministry-based GCPE employees and to Writers and Editors in the Writing and Editing Services Unit
  • Use news release management system
  • Assess the needs for contracted writing services, and negotiate, tender, award and monitor contracts
  • Act in the absence of the Manager, Writing and Editorial Services, as required



  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in Writing, English, Journalism, Communications or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in writing, research, public relations or government communications.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Comfortable in fast-paced settings demanding a high level of efficiency.
  • Highly developed organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills for establishing effective relationships with management, employees, and the public and working cooperatively with other to achieve results.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to exercise considerable judgement in the performance of duties and in the establishment of priorities.
  • Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry (Note:  It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the specific security screening requirements pertaining to the position).
