The Office of the Human Rights Commissioner (OHRC) is an independent office of the provincial legislature that will focus on promoting and protecting human rights through education, research, policy development, and public investigations into issues of systemic discrimination in the province.
The General Counsel acts as in-house legal counsel, representing the Commissioner on legal matters that arise during the exercise of the powers and duties set out in the Human Rights Code. This includes conducting legal research and analysis, preparing legal opinions, and providing legal advice and services, particularly related to the Commissioner’s intervenor, test case, and inquiry functions under sections 47.12(1)(j), 47.12(2) and 47.15 of the Code. The General Counsel works with the Commissioner to draft decision documents and public reports arising out of public inquiries and acts as a key legal advisor to the Commissioner on OHRC policy development, public investigations, and other matters. As a member of the Leadership Team, the General Counsel contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of the OHRC’s strategic direction, policies, legal operations and organizational culture.
