Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Specialist

This position can be located in Victoria, Nanaimo, or the Lower Mainland; Cranbrook, Kamloops or Penticton may also be considered, subject to Ministry operational requirements.

The Ecosystems Branch within the Environmental Sustainability & Strategic Policy Division of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy leads the development of program policy, legislation, regulations, standards, guidelines and science to conserve the natural ecological diversity of the Province’s ecosystems. The Branch is responsible for developing principles, long term goals, strategies; results based standards and best practices including setting Ministry priorities for ecosystems conservation, protection and recovery.

The Terrestrial Invasive Fauna Specialist will be reporting to the Invasive Fauna Unit Head within the Conservation Science Section. The invasive species unit is focused on mitigating the threat associated with invasive species. This position will focus exclusively on terrestrial invasive animals and collaborate with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development biologists who are responsible for operational invasive animal eradication and management efforts.

The purpose of this position is to be the ministry’s science expert for terrestrial invasive fauna.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:

Education and Experience:

  • PhD in a related science field (e.g. biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) AND two (2) years’ related* experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in a related science field (e.g. biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) AND three (3) years’ related* experience; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related science field (e.g. biological sciences, ecology, natural resources management or related discipline) AND four (4) years’ related* experience.
  • Registered (or immediately eligible for membership) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. and in good standing with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.

*Related experience must include the following:

  • Experience managing projects (including design, implementation and evaluation phases, not necessarily for the same project).
  • At least two (2) years’ experience writing and/or reviewing funding applications and/or partnership agreements.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in data management, synthesis and reporting.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience communicating complicated scientific concepts in a simple way to the general public and/or government executives, orally and in writing.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience working in a field-based environment (terrestrial environment preferred).
  • At least two (2) years’ experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation, regulations and/or policies.
  • Experience in negotiating/mediating solutions in natural resource management.

Preference may be given to applicants with experience working with:

  • invasive species.
  • First Nations.

If you are not yet registered with the CAB, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the CAB).
