The Special Authority (SA) unit adjudicates patient-specific requests for limited coverage drug benefits as well as exceptional requests for non-benefit drugs.  Limited coverage drug benefits are drugs with pre-established criteria as recommended by the Drug Benefit Council.   This unit receives and processes 1,200 to 1,300 Special Authority requests per day submitted by prescribers on behalf of their patients.  The requests are handled by Special Authority staff comprised of clerks, technicians and pharmacists.  The unit also utilizes advisory committees comprised of contracted practicing physician specialists to advise on more medically complex requests. These requests are adjudicated with the results confirmed back to the physician.  Special Authority adjudication decisions have a direct and significant impact on the costs of the PharmaCare program, with an annual expenditure of approximately $400 million for the Limited Drug Coverage program.

This positions responsibility is to process Special Authority drug requests by verifying information on the Special Authority (SA) medication requests and providing records management support services.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Secondary school graduation (Grade 12) or equivalent (GED).
  • At least 6 months administrative/clerical/reception experience gained in an office environment.
  • Database experience including entering, updating and retrieving data; ensuring data integrity; navigating to conduct searches; and extracting information.
  • Experience in records management, including electronic and/or physical files.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Experience with PharmaNet database.
  • Experience with LAN Fax application.
  • Experience in a Pharmacy, Medical office, or Special Authority environment.
