It is acknowledged that Central Okanagan Public Schools operates within the traditional unceded territory of the Okanagan Syilx peoples. The school district enrolls approximately 24,000 students (including over 2700 students who self-identify as having Indigenous ancestry). Central Okanagan Public Schools is located in the Central Okanagan encompassing the communities of Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, Lake Country and Oyama. There are a total of 45 school sites with 30 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 5 secondary schools and 3 alternate schools.
Reporting to the District Principal of Indigenous Education, the Vice Principal of Indigenous Education will provide leadership and assume a wide range of responsibilities aimed at leading, promoting, and supporting Indigenous educational and cultural initiatives across the District (K-12). The Vice Principal’s primary responsibility will be to foster Indigenous student success and to support the District Principal of Indigenous Education in reconciliation.
In addition to possessing or being eligible for a membership in the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch (formerly B.C. College of Teachers) and possessing an appropriate Master’s Degree or in the process of obtaining a Master’s Degree, it is expected that the successful candidate for this position will demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and qualities:
Extensive knowledge and understanding of, and experience with Indigenous culture, history, language and contemporary issues facing Indigenous people;
The ability and desire to work collaboratively with school communities and the District’s Indigenous Education Council;
A strong commitment to Indigenous student success and to Indigenous parent and Indigenous community involvement;
Ability to provide supervision and support for the Indigenous Program staff (e.g. Indigenous Student Advocates, Teacher Tutors and Cultural Presenters);
Ability to plan, guide, and monitor implementation measures intended to improve Indigenous student academic performance and success leading to graduation
Previous school and / or district-level administrative experience.
