B.C. government and Williams Lake First Nation to sign landmark government-to-government cannabis deal – The Growth Op

“We’re pushing the envelope a little bit by creating our own cannabis law,” Chief Willie Sellars said. “And you’re seeing other First Nations in the province doing the same thing.”

Williams Lake First Nation is gearing up to be the province’s first indigenous community to sign an inter-governmental deal under B.C.’s Cannabis Control and Licensing Act.

Chief Willie Sellars told Business in Vancouver the deal will help kickstart a seed-to-sale cannabis production facility on First Nations land. The terms will be finalized within the next four weeks, and stipulates that cannabis may only be sold if it has been produced by a federally-licensed entity.

“It’s going to be the first government-to-government agreement around cannabis, I think in the country,” Sellars told BIV. “It’s going to make us legal in the eyes of the province and complement what our strategy is moving forward around a farm-to-gate licence – going from seed to sale in our facility.”
