B.C. Wildfires: Surrounded First Nation stands ground to save community – Vancouver Sun

ANAHAM — The Tl’etinqox First Nation is a community trying to defend itself from fire in almost every direction.

The community, also known as Anaham, has chosen not to evacuate, and hundreds of people have stayed put to fight fires, build fireguards and provide logistical support, as well as food and supplies.

To the west, maybe five kilometres or more away across the Chilcotin River, visible from the band office and health centre – which is serving as a staging and communication centre – is a billowing mass of dark-grey smoke.

There are more fires burning to the south and east.

Long stretches of timber and grass already burned to varying degrees are visible on Highway 20 leading into Anaham, about 100 kilometres west of Williams Lake.
