VANCOUVER – The B-C government has unveiled new details about how it intends to regulate marijuana, saying it will set the minimum age for buying and using pot at 19 years.

The province’s solicitor general, Mike Farnworth, says keeping the age limit consistent with alcohol and tobacco laws will make it more effective at protecting young people and getting rid of the black market.

B-C’s announcement comes as the federal government gears up to legalize recreational cannabis in next July.

Farnworth has tapped the province’s liquor distribution branch to be in charge of distributing cannabis.

Details remain scarce on what marijuana retail would look like, though Farnworth says the province intends to allow for both public and private vendors.

The announcement follows a public consultation period that received submissions from nearly 50-thousand residents and more than 140 local and Indigenous governments.

Manitoba released its plan for pot the same days as B-C.

The province will also limit cannabis to residents who are at least 19 years old, and will prohibit anyone from growing plants at home.
