Camosun: Cultural Showcase celebrates international and local students’ talent
March 17, 2017
On Friday, March 24, 2017 at the Alix Goolden Performance Hall, 907 Pandora Ave, more than 10 different acts will bring cultures together and celebrate diverse expressions of talent. Admission is free for this family-friendly event.
The popular Camosun International Cultural Showcase, now in its tenth consecutive year, celebrates a talented cohort of international and local student performers.
Performances range from Indian classical fusion dance, to a fashion show of global style, to music by Camosun Music students and other musicians from the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Camosun will also welcome back the talented child dancers from community guests, Chinese Cultural Dance Victoria, for the third year in a row. The evening of performances will begin with an acknowledgement ceremony by Indigenous elders.
“Every year, we are surprised and awed by the performances in the showcase,” says Helena Cui, Camosun International’s events coordinator. “And this year, we are thrilled to see so many local and community performers join Camosun’s international students on stage. It’s a truly inclusive and multicultural event.”
Presented by Camosun International and Peer Connections, CI”s student leadership group, the Cultural Showcase is produced and organized by Camosun students. The Alix Goolden Performance Hall provides the perfect stage and greater exposure to the community beyond Camosun. After a six-year run in the college’s Young Auditorium, the event moved to the Alix Goolden in 2014 due to increased popularity.
The showcase coincides with the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, promoting tolerance and acceptance of other cultures through creativity. While there is no admission charge for the Cultural Showcase, donations in support of World University Service of Canada (WUSC) will be accepted.
