I·SPARC seeking Indigenous coaching staff and announces Team BC Player Selection Camp for 2018 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships

Tuesday, November 7, 2017 – The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I∙SPARC) is issuing a province-wide call for qualified Indigenous hockey coaches to apply to serve on the Team BC volunteer coaching staff and is also pleased to announce the details of the Player Selection Camp for Team BC’s participation in the 2018 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC).  The 2018 NAHC will be hosted in Membertou First Nation, Nova Scotia, May 6-12, 2018.

CALL FOR COACH APPLICATIONS

Applications for the Head Coach and Assistant Coach positions for both the female and male teams are now being accepted.  The successful candidates for these volunteer positions will be selected by the Provincial Indigenous Hockey Committee.

Qualifications:

  • The coaching staff will consist of one (1) head coach, two (2) assistant coaches, and one (1) team manager for each the Male and the Female teams.
  • Only those coaches eligible to be a registered member with BC Hockey or another Hockey Canada Branch are eligible to apply for coach position.
  • Head coaches must possess a minimum of Intermediate and/or Developmental 1 Certification. Assistant coaches must possess a minimum of Coach Level and/or Coach Stream Certification.
  • Pass a criminal record and vulnerable sector check.
  • Must be available to attend the three-day Team BC Player Selection Camp to be held in Kamloops from April 6-8, 2018. Must be available to attend the 2018 NAHC in Membertou First Nation, Nova Scotia from May 6-12, 2018.

2018 PLAYER SELECTION CAMP

Top Indigenous male and female hockey players are invited to participate in the 2018 Team BC Player Selection Camp where players will be evaluated and selected over a three-day period by the Coaching staff.  The Selection Camp will be held April 6-8, 2018 at the Valleyview Arena in Kamloops, BC.

The 2018 Camp Registration Fee is $120 per player and will include a Team BC Selection Camp jersey.  Pre-registration is mandatory as no ‘walk-ins’ are accepted.  Online registration will open on January 15, 2018 at www.teambcnahc.com.

Players must meet the following criteria to be eligible to participate in the Camp:

  • Resident of British Columbia and be of Aboriginal ancestry (First Nations, Inuit, Métis)
  • Registered or eligible to be registered with BC Hockey. (Players currently not registered with BC Hockey may be registered via this camp for an additional fee of $40.)
  • Male: Bantam or Midget age, as of the 2017/18 competitive season (born 2000 to 2004)
  • Female: Bantam or Midget age, as of the 2017/18 competitive season (born 2000 to 2004)

National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC)

The NAHC provides a forum for elite Bantam/Midget age Aboriginal hockey players from across Canada. The event aids in fostering cultural unity and pride and celebrates the athletic abilities of Indigenous athletes from across the country. Team BC is represented by two teams, one male and one female which are both comprised of the top players from across the province.

The overarching mission of the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I∙SPARC) is to improve the health outcomes of Indigenous people across British Columbia by supporting and encouraging physically active communities and by expanding access to sports and recreation opportunities.
