Theatre company brings indigenous legend to life for Kelowna

Jan 20, 2020

Vancouver theatre company Axis is bringing indigenous legend to life for Kelowna audiences this February.

The award-winning organization will be performing Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish at Kelowna’s Mary Irwin Theatre at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

Indigenous storytellers spin a tale about Th’owxiya from the Kwantlen First Nations Village of Squa’lets. She is an old and powerful spirit that inhabits a feast dish.

Her dish holds amazing foods from around the world, but she’s developed a rather acquired taste for children, and demands two child spirits be brought to her for consumption when she catches Kw’atel the mouse stealing cheese.

If Kw’atel doesn’t oblige, Th’owxiya will eat its whole family, so the mouse sets off on an adventure to find alternate gifts to appease the ancient spirit, with the help of the Sqeweqs (raven), two Spa:th (bears) and Sasq’ets (sasquatch).
