New KPU Program to Train the Next Wave of Communication Professionals
Jun 24, 2020
At a time when the need for clear, ethical and culturally-aware communication has never been stronger, Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s new Diploma in Public Relations (PR) answers the call.
From video production and unlocking the power of social media, to understanding ethical business practices and Indigenous worldviews, the PR diploma has had a major redesign to ensure students have the skills and awareness to succeed in today’s workplace.
Drawing on guidance from communication experts and aligning with global benchmarks, the two-year program launching in September will allow students to graduate with a recognized credential, and to progress into a Bachelor of Business Administration or a Bachelor of Arts degree at KPU.
“Our new PR diploma allows students to study at their own pace, easily ladder into four-year degrees, and graduate as business-savvy, culturally-competent communicators,” says program co-ordinator Andrew Frank. “We are excited to continue building on our strong reputation by training excellent communicators who can help organizations navigate increasingly complex social issues and crises.”
Other changes to the program include offering courses on both the Surrey and Richmond campuses, open registration to offer PR courses to students across the university and to allow interaction with students in other disciplines, as well as new courses in business, ethics and Indigenous studies.
A co-op work experience option has also been added to give students more opportunities to gather the experience vital to getting their careers off to a fast start, while also being paid while they learn.
“For more than 20 years the KPU PR diploma program has been preparing students for a career in professional communications and we’ve seen many go on to have highly successful careers,” says Stephanie Howes, dean of the School of Business. “These changes will ensure our students have the real-world skills, cultural competencies, professional ethics and connections to succeed in the future.”
