Edmonton police, city officials anticipating major delays, traffic congestion in downtown core

Vehicles carrying both climate strikers and oil and gas supporters began the journey north to Edmonton Friday morning, all headed for the same destination: a massive rally at the Alberta Legislature that will be attended by 16-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

About 100 Calgarians filled two buses. They plan to join the crowd of climate strikers, which is expected to total more than 1,000 people.

Meanwhile, about two dozen vehicles carrying oil and gas supporters departed from a truck wash in Red Deer at about 7 a.m. MT. The convoy planned to do a mid-morning stop in Nisku, south of Edmonton, to pick up more vehicles.
