Position Summary
Interior Health is looking for a Director, Support Services, IH South to join our support services team in Kelowna, B.C.! If you are interested in expanding your career opportunities and develop your leadership skills, this is the position for you!

About the Role:

The Director, Support Services is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of Food and Housekeeping Services throughout the Health Service Area. The Director will also work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the delivery of Laundry Services aligns with Interior Health (IH) expectations and is supported, where applicable, by programs throughout the Health Service Areas.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the overall planning, management, organization, and evaluation of all functions (including staffing, supplies, and operating budgets) for Food, Housekeeping, Waste Management/Recycling, and non-contract Laundry Operations.

The Director works in close collaboration with local Administrators, and other departments throughout their region to ensure Support Services are aligned with other IH programs and services.

This is a permanent full time position. Hours of work are Monday to Friday and shifts times are 08:00 to 16:00.

Some Key Duties may include:

• Manages and oversees Food and Housekeeping services by planning, coordinating, monitoring, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of Food and Housekeeping Services based on the operational needs throughout the Health Service Areas.

• Ensures appropriate oversight for the service management component for laundry services and provides strong linkage between clinical services, IH contract management, and the service provider.

• Ensures a safe working environment for all staff within the portfolio.

• Is accountable for the annual operating budgets for all areas of responsibility and develops and implements adequate controls of approved budgets, including monitoring the budget, identifying variances, and taking corrective action in order to maintain a balanced budget.

• Identifies and leads strategies around recruitment and retention, the reduction of overtime, and monitoring of sick time throughout the portfolio.

• Provides leadership and direction to designated team members using effective management techniques (e.g., coaching, mentoring, skill and leadership development, decision making, coalition building, performance and talent management, and recruitment). Maintains a good working knowledge of relevant collective agreements and provides direction and leadership under the current terms and conditions of the collective agreement.

• Provides leadership and input for operational practice by seeking out and identifying best practice in service delivery and ensuring that procedures and policies developed by the organization reflect standardization and best practice and, once complete, are communicated and implemented throughout the Health Service Areas.

• Leads projects and initiatives across the Support Services portfolio.

• Consciously creates a workplace culture that is consistent with the overall organization’s culture of “Every Person Matters” and emphasizes the identified mission, vision, guiding principles, and values of the organization.

• Ensures safe and quality service is delivered, all the while ensuring cost efficiency, consistency, and standardization is achieved.

• Provides oversight to the administrative support activities within Support Services by ensuring workflows are organized and priorities are determined to meet the needs and requirements of the Health Service Areas.

• Provides direction and leadership towards a safe and healthy workplace for patients/clients and staff and ensures that health and safety requirements for operational areas are met. Ensures the reporting of unsafe situations, investigations, and corrective actions and/or notification of appropriate personnel occurs including ongoing training of staff as required. Training includes work methods, safety standards, usage of chemicals etc., and demonstration of new equipment and products as required.

• Provides direction for optimized services for the Health Service Area and ensures that all services comply with all regulatory acts (e.g., WCB, Food Premises Act, and organizational policies).

• Consults with Clinical Operations leaderhsip, and department leads as required to determine the quality and effectiveness of services and supplies provided.

• Participates in labour relations activities as required. Interprets collective agreements and legislation in consultation with Human Resources.

• Participates as a member on product selection committees, infection control committees, and any other quality assurance committees as required.

• Serves as a knowledgeable resource to the organization’s management team which provides leadership and direction. Represents the Health Authority on provincial committees as required.

• Represents the Corporate Director, Support Services in his/her absence.

• Performs other related duties and/or projects as assigned.

• A Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Food, and/or Environmental services, or a related discipline.
• Ten years of practical experience in a Management/Administrative position in a related health services field.
• Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated ability to plan, consolidate, and deliver high quality services in a cost-efficient, customer-focused manner.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate and lead within a team environment.
• Excellent communication skills including a demonstrated high degree of skill in negotiating, problem solving, conflict management, and communications.
• Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a highly-dynamic, fast-paced, and continually-changing environment.
• Knowledge of relevant computer applications.
• Ability to work under pressure and willingness to embrace the self-directed team approach to management.
• Demonstrated ability to work diplomatically and persuasively to establish and maintain effective work relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• A BC Driver’s license.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
