GeoBC is the key organization providing business solutions built on geographic information for the Province of British Columbia. GeoBC creates and manages geospatial information and products as well as provides consultation services across all natural resource sector (NRS) agencies. The branch is responsible for critical products and services that include the geospatial reference, base mapping, integrated cadastre and parcel mapping, digital imagery, land research and status, tenure business support and boundaries, integrated land and resource registry, spatial analysis, decision support, business improvement, and emergency response.

The position is located within the Business Innovation and Emergency Response unit within GeoBC. The unit is accountable for provincial coordination of geospatial activities in support of natural hazards, emergency management and public safety activities under Emergency Management BC and other public safety stakeholders. We provide cross sector leadership in coordination of spatial business improvement/innovation activities and explore new and evolving geospatial technologies to transform client business (e.g mobile and web mapping solutions). In addition, we manage provincial coordination of spatial training to support organisational capacity building for the entire Public Service.

As the Geomatics Coordinator, you will research, develop, implement and share processes, methods, data and tools for Integrated Risk Assessment & Disaster Mitigation. This will include the exploration and use of innovative geospatial business solutions to support Natural Hazard and Emergency Management business. This role requires intermediate to advanced level experience in GIS Analyses, Remote Sensing and Cartography, a keen awareness of new geospatial technologies, and an understanding of web mapping using ArcGIS Online.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Degree in resource management, geography, or a related field; OR
  • Diploma in geographic information systems; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in GIS to support a wide range of projects.
  • Experience in conducting research and developing methodologies.
  • Minimum three years’ experience using ESRI GIS products, in particular ArcGIS Suite of Tools including ArcGIS Desktop/ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience in managing projects.

*Preference may be given to applicants who have experience and/or training in one or more of the following:

  • A variety of emergency management, natural resource, economic, and/or social data sets.
  • Automating or scripting solutions for repetitive tasks using tools such as Python, or other programming languages (e.g. java script), FME, SQL.
  • Experience in Server technologies e.g. ArcGIS Enterprise (ArcGIS Server, Imagery Server, ArcGIS Portal) or MapServer.
  • Coordinating and liaising with partners and stakeholders.
  • Developing and managing large spatial and attribute data sets.
  • Working under pressure in an Emergency Operations Centre.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in LiDAR application to conduct analysis and create products to support business areas.
