Inaugural Tahltan HEO Program Camp Life Orientation Completes Successful Week

The first-ever Tahltan HEO Program Camp Life Orientation week – held at the Newcrest Red Chris Mine – has successfully wrapped. Running from March 16 to 23, the first four participants experienced first-hand what life is like working and living at a remote operating mine.

Their days started at 4:00 am with breakfast, before catching a 5:15 am bus from the camp to the work site, where they attended daily Safety Tailgate Meetings. The 12-hour shifts (6:00 am to 6:00 pm) included learning, training, and hands-on operating experience.

The group – supported by TNDC Mentors – completed the @Mining Industry HR Council Common Competency Curriculum, learned about different mining jobs and opportunities from industry experts, and spent time in the field riding in a haul truck and learning how to drive a compactor roller.

Participants will be back onsite March 30 to April 6 and April 27 to May 10 to gain experience operating compactor rollers and haul trucks, which will prepare them for placement as an HEO apprentice with an industry partner in Tahltan Territory.
