Do we want Canada to protect Indigenous tourism?
This is the question that keeps me up every night since Canada has come to realize the dramatic impacts of COVID-19. We know the importance of the measures being taken to prevent the virus from spreading, especially throughout our vulnerable Indigenous communities across Canada.
However, I worry that there has yet to be a meaningful conversation about how COVID-19 is destroying Indigenous businesses, especially our world-leading Indigenous tourism experiences.
With no end in sight to travel bans and physical distancing, it’s likely that Canadian Indigenous tourism businesses will lose their 2020 season, meaning that 40,000 workers will lose their incomes for the year. They, and the Indigenous economy at large, are in peril.
