Minister’s statement on National Police Week
May 15, 2023
VICTORIA – Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, has released the following statement in recognition of National Police Week, May 14-20, 2023:
“In our largest cities and smallest towns, in remote villages and Indigenous communities, we rely on police officers to prevent crime and violence, and protect people. Every day they selflessly and courageously uphold public safety, putting their lives at risk so the rest of us can live in peace and safety.
“Policing is becoming more complex, and demands on first responders continue to grow. Exceptional police officers throughout the province continue to answer the call to keep our streets safe.
“Across Canada, this has been an exceptionally difficult year for policing, with several officers killed in the line of duty. These losses resonate deeply with British Columbians. Let us honour their memory and their service.
“In April, during this year’s Police Honours Awards, we recognized the accomplishments of 154 inspiring B.C. law enforcement officers who demonstrated remarkable bravery, dedication and initiative. The people and communities they serve are grateful for their service and reflect on them as a source of strength, comfort and determination when they need it most.
“This week, and every day of the year, I invite all British Columbians to show their appreciation for police officers serving across our province. As our government continues to work on every front to ensure British Columbians feel safe, I am grateful that we partner with extraordinary law enforcement officers to build safer, stronger and more resilient communities.”
