National Indigenous Peoples Day 2023
NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY 2023
(Coast Salish Territory/Vancouver BC) – June 6, 2023) On June 21, 2023, the Northwest Indigenous Council Society (NWIC) along with Aboriginal Life in Vancouver Enhancement Society and Dzunukwa Society will be celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day at the Mungo Martin Big House located at 475 Belleville Street in Victoria, BC. The event will run from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm and will include lunch, speeches, cultural events, giveaways, and membership activities.
Throughout the month of June, we are celebrating National Indigenous History Month to recognize the rich history, culture and traditions of the Coast Salish peoples. NWIC is based on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples – Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Kwantlen, Kwikwetlem, Matwqui, Tsawwassen, Katzie, Kwantlen, Qayqayt, and Semiahmoo Nations. NWIC is working for seven generations into the future to enhance, promote, protect and foster the social, economic, educational, cultural, health and well-being and rights of Indigenous peoples living off reserve in British Columbia.
June 21, 2023, the summer solstice, is the longest day of the year and holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for all Indigenous peoples and symbolizes a new season of life, and a chance to start fresh leaving the burdens of the past behind. We gather on this date to celebrate and thank Mother Earth for her gifts and to celebrate our languages, cultures and ceremonies.
Come and celebrate with us!
