Northwest Indigenous Council congratulates Matthew Morin –
Winner of the 2021 Dwight Dorey Advocacy Award

(Coast Salish Territory/Vancouver, BC – November 17, 2021) The Northwest Indigenous Council Society (NWIC) is proud to announce that Matthew Morin, Board Member, has received the Dwight Dorey Advocacy Award for 2021. This award is given out by the National Youth Council of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples to honour and recognize Indigenous youth who have demonstrated outstanding advocacy for Indigenous youth and who are a positive role model in community and volunteer engagements.

Matthew Morin is an advocate for Indigenous youth in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, which is an area with complex social issues including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime and mental illness. “We are the Indigenous youth of the traditional and unceded ancestral territory of the Coast Salish. It’s our sacred duty to protect our culture, treaties, Indigenous rights and title as well as the health of our community. We seek to bring about change through knowledge and sharing,” said Matthew Morin.

NWIC was incorporated in 2015 and became an affiliate of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples in 2016. The purpose of NWIC is to work for seven generations in the future and enhance, promote, protect and foster the social, economic, educational, cultural, health and well-being and rights of Indigenous peoples living off reserve in British Columbia. We are based on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples – Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh, Kwantlen, Kwikwetlem, Matwqui, Tsawwassen, Katzie, Kwantlen, Qayqayt, and Semiahmoo Nations: namwayut – (we are all one).
