NVIT Remembers and Honours the Legacy of Senator Murray Sinclair

November 5, 2024 – Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) joins Indigenous communities and Canadians across the country in mourning the passing of Senator Murray Sinclair. His lifetime dedication to justice, truth, and reconciliation transformed lives and has left an indelible mark on Indigenous education and community resilience.

Senator Murray Sinclair, a member of the Peguis First Nation in Manitoba, was the first Indigenous judge appointed in Manitoba and served as the Chair of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Leading the TRC, Senator Sinclair courageously investigated the devastating impacts of the residential school system, and his work laid a foundation for understanding, healing, and action across Canada. Through the TRC’s final report and its 94 Calls to Action, he brought to light the truths of Canada’s colonial history and called on the nation to commit to meaningful reconciliation and redress.

With the passing of Senator Sinclair, it is essential for all Canadians to pick up the mantle of his legacy in advancing Truth and Reconciliation efforts across all aspects of Canadian society. At NVIT, “TRC since ’83” is the ethos we hope to inspire in every graduate of every program we offer within BC and across the country. Senator Sinclair’s vision continues to guide NVIT’s mission as BC’s Indigenous public post-secondary institution, strengthening our commitment to Indigenous-centered, culturally relevant education. His legacy reminds us to address historical injustices and build pathways for Indigenous learners to succeed.

NVIT remains committed to honouring Senator Sinclair’s legacy by fostering environments that embrace Indigenous values, knowledge, and healing. We will continue to support a future rooted in reconciliation, justice, and respect for Indigenous ways of knowing.
