Today, Prophet River First Nation and the City of Fort St. John signed a Memorandum of Understanding [PDF – 233 KB] regarding the Establishment of Reserve Lands in or near the City of Fort St. John.

This Memorandum of Understanding recognizes that together both parties can support a prosperous local economy, provide an opportunity for cultural expression within a diverse community setting, maintain a healthy environment, and ensure a strong and safe social fabric. It recognizes the strong government-to-government relationship between Prophet River First Nation and the City of Fort St. John.

“This is an exciting step for our Nation and our members. Fort St. John has always been home for us, and this Memorandum of Understanding means we will always be able to call Fort St. John home,” said Prophet River First Nation Chief Valerie Askoty.

“We continue to work with First Nations whose ancestors have lived here since time immemorial to build relationships and work towards our shared goals. Thanks to the hard work of our respective Councils and staff, we are eager to enhance our community and provide local economic opportunities,” stated Mayor Lori Ackerman.
