VICTORIA – John Horgan Leader of B.C.’s New Democrats, made the following statement recognizing the one year anniversary of the Tsilhqot’in decision:

“One year ago today Canada’s Supreme Court issued a historic decision, a decision that affirmed the legal necessity of acknowledging and respecting Aboriginal rights and title.

“This decision marked a great day not just for the Tsilhqot’in people, but for First Nations across British Columbia, and throughout the country, who have been fighting for recognition for much too long.

“Of course, the decision was not the end of the discussion of how governments can work respectfully with First Nations, it was just the beginning.

“It is my hope that we can join together today to acknowledge and celebrate this victory for the Tsilhqot’in people.”
