WILLIAMS LAKE — Leaders of the First Nation that won a historic right to land title are dismayed that the B.C. government extended a permit for a controversial mine project without their agreement.

The province granted a five-year extension of an environmental assessment certificate to the New Prosperity gold and copper mine project near Williams Lake.

Tsilhqot’in Nation Chief Joe Alphonse says it should be illegal for the province to make such a decision without his band’s consent.

The Tsilhqot’in Nation became the first aboriginal band in Canada to win title to its territory last June in a unanimous Supreme Court decision.
